Drop In Session with the SWP Hate Crime Team covering Swansea, Neath and Port Talbot.
A Hate Crime is: A criminal offence, which is perceived by the victim or any other person, to be motivated by a hostility or prejudice based on a protected characteristic or perceived protected characteristic.
A Non- Crime Hate Incident is: An incident (Non-Crime), which is perceived by the victim or any other person, to be motivated by a hostility or prejudice based on a protected characteristic or perceived protected characteristic.
The law recognises five types of hate crime on the basis of:-
- Race or Ethnicity
- Religion or Belief
- Disability
- Sexual Orientation
- Trans/Gender Identity
How can Hate Crime be dealt with:
- A victim/witness can report an incident to the Police and wish for no further action to be taken, we are victim led. This allows the Police to support the victim and correctly record Hate Crime/Hate incidents in Swansea, Neath, Port Talbot.
- A Hate Crime can be dealt with by a Restorative justice process which is an out of court disposal, subject to the perpetrator’s previous history. An example of this would be a letter of apology from the perpetrator.
- Alternatively, a full file of evidence would be submitted to the Crown Prosecution Service for a charging decision.
Hate Crime drop-in sessions:
- Every Thursday we hold a hate crime drop-in session at The National Waterfront museum, Swansea between 11:00 and 14:00 in the Collaboration Station. (Donna Curnock also present from Sadies Butterflies).
- Every Friday we hold a hate crime drop-in session at the Cultural Hub between 09:00 and 12:00 at the Swansea Grand Theatre.
- Safer Neath, Port Talbot Pop up events at different locations around NPT
- One Stop Shops at the National Waterfront Museum (First Monday of every month).
Hate Crime can be reported in the following ways:
- 999 in an emergency
- 101 for a non-Emergency or visit a Police Station

The Police offer every Victim/Witness of Hate Crime the opportunity to be referred to the Victim Support (Wales Hate Support Centre).
